In the 85 years since our school’s founding, its identity has evolved too: from Tainan Technical College in 1931, to Taiwan Provincial College of Engineering in 1946, Taiwan Provincial Cheng Kung University in 1956, and National Cheng Kung University in 1971. Named after Zheng Chenggong (Koxinga), a heroic pioneer of Taiwan’s development, NCKU’s history has been closely bound up with the changes that have affected our nation and society. Encouraging Creative Thinking The Research and Services Headquarters at NCKU is the first unit of its kind in Taiwan higher education. In terms of green energy for sustainable development, NCKU’s Research Center for Energy Technology and Strategy is pursuing research into offshore wind power generation, and the center’s industrial furnace demonstration laboratory has achieved carbon dioxide capture rates of more than 94%, bringing new opportunities for green energy policy. During outbreaks of dengue fever, the Center of Infectious Disease and Signaling Research at NCKU has effectively applied results from its longitudinal research into dengue fever, while the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering has used big data analysis to assist the Tainan City Government in forecasting the progress of the outbreaks to implement effective control measures. As a result, NCKU was chosen as an exemplary university for disease prevention and control. After a devastating earthquake in Tainan in February 2016, NCKU also immediately joined in the rescue and recovery effort. To address a rapidly aging rural population, NCKU’s Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences works with the school’s Departments of Architecture and Biomedical Engineering to conduct community-based research into healthcare governance. NCKU is committed to social care and engagement. NCKU’s spirit of sustainable innovation has also been applied to rejuvenating the historic city of Tainan. The school’s Satellite321 program has transformed an old house into an art gallery to help revitalize the city and promote international cultural exchange. C-Hub–NCKU’s creativity base and platform–enables interactive events such as brainstorming among students and the faculty, experimental learning, and creative thinking. It facilitates academia–industry interaction in Tainan, where it also serves as an urban incubator, to help make Tainan, local industries there, and school per se all winners. Moreover, NCKU serves as a watchdog of food safety. NCKU alumni are to be found not only in Taiwan but throughout the world, with their far-reaching influence felt from North America to Southeast Asia. For example, when preparations were underway to establish the Southern Taiwan Science Park, NCKU alumni in North America made a concerted effort to help the project come to fruition, bringing together academia and the business community to facilitate industrial development in Southern Taiwan. Every year many overseas Chinese students from Southeast Asia choose to come to Taiwan and study at NCKU. Thus the school’s NCKU alumni have a strong presence in countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, where many have their own businesses. They recommend outstanding students to their alma mater, promote academia–industry cooperation, and extend NCKU’s social care initiatives locally. A charity run organized by the NCKU Alumni Association of Malaysia in 2016 not only attracted alumnus runners but turned into to a major event with numerous local participants, successfully raising funds for University Malaya Medical Centre Care Fund (PPUM Care Fund). For example, there are sculptures such as The Poet, his head bowed in thought; the two figures of Ju Ming’s Taichi Shadow Boxing, doing battle on a lawn; Butterfly Dance, alive with vibrant colors and intense visual elements; and Pondering with its theme of Zen meditation. Nearly 100 artworks on campus amount to a feast of art, and the density of public artworks at NCKU is the highest in Taiwan. The school’s five-star library has a total floor area approaching 53,000 square meters, and one of the largest collections of books and e-periodicals in Taiwan. Internet access points and sockets throughout the library to meet the needs of the e-generation, and interlibrary cooperation with many other university libraries in Taiwan helps students more easily navigate the ocean of knowledge.
