1. Epigenetic silencing of AATK in acinar to ductal metaplasia in murine model of pancreatic cancer:Ding et al. (2020) Clinical Epigenetics, 12(1), 87. Cite this article。Cancer subtype switching, which involves unclear cancer cell origin, cell fate decision, and transdifferentiation of cells within a confined tumor microenvironment, remains a major problem in pancreatic cancer (PDA). By analyzing PDA subtypes in The Cancer Genome Atlas, we identified that epigenetic silencing of Apoptosis Associated Tyrosine Kinase (AATK) inversely was correlated with mRNA expression and was enriched in the quasi-mesenchymal cancer subtype. By comparing early mouse pancreatic lesions, the non-invasive regions showed AATK co-expression in cells with acinar-to-ductal metaplasia, but the invasive lesions revealed diminished AATK expression in cells with poorly differentiated histology. Transiently activated AATK initiates acinar differentiation into a ductal cell fate to establish apical-basal polarization in acinar-to-ductal metaplasia. Silenced AATK and ectopically expressed p63 and HNF1α allow the proliferation of ductal PanINs in mice. Epigenetic silencing of AATK regulates the cellular transdifferentiation, proliferation, and cell cycle progression in converting PDA-subtypes。
2. Evaluation of Vertical Ground Reaction Forces Pattern Visualization in Neurodegenerative Diseases Identification Using Deep Learning and Recurrence Plot Image Feature Extraction:Lin et al. (2020) Sensors, 20(14), 3857. Cite this article。To diagnose neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), physicians have been clinically evaluating symptoms. However, these symptoms are not very dependable—particularly in the early stages of the diseases. This study has therefore proposed a novel classification algorithm that uses a deep learning approach to classify NDDs based on the recurrence plot of gait vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) data. In the preprocessing process, the 5-min vGRF data divided into 10-s successive time windows. In the feature transformation process, the time-domain vGRF data are modified into an image using a recurrence plot. The principal component analysis (PCA) is used in this stage for feature enhancement. Lastly, the convolutional neural network (CNN), as a deep learning classifier, is employed in the classification process and evaluated using the leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV). The experimental results included two-class and multiclass classifications with the best average accuracy were 98.65% and 97.86%, respectively。
3. Differentiating anomalous disease intensity with confounding variables in space:Wu, C.-C., & Shete, S. (2020). International Journal of Health Geographics, 19(1), 37. Cite this article。With the identification of disease clusters of statistical significance, to determine whether or not the detected disease clusters can be explained by known or suspected risk factors is a logical next step. The models allowing for confounding variables permit the investigators to determine if some risk factors can explain the occurrence of geographical clustering of disease incidence and to investigate other hidden spatially related risk factors if there still exist geographical disease clusters, after adjusting for risk factors. We propose to develop statistical methods for differentiating incidence intensity of geographical disease clusters of peak incidence and low incidence in a hierarchical manner, adjusted for confounding variables. With the information on hierarchy in adjusted intensity levels, epidemiologists and public health officials can better prioritize the regions with the highest rates for thorough etiologic studies, seeking hidden spatially related risk factors and precisely moving resources to areas with genuine highest abnormalities。
4. Long Short-Term Memory Approach to Estimate Battery Remaining Useful Life Using Partial Data:Chinomona, B., Chung, C., Chang, L.-K., Su, W.-C., & Tsai, M.-C. (2020). IEEE Access, 8, 165419–165431. Cite this article。Due to the increasing demand of electrical vehicles, prognostics of the battery state is of paramount importance. The nonlinearity of the signal results in the complexity of analyzing the degradation of the battery. The drawbacks of the previous prediction algorithms are insufficient or irrelevant features to explicitly model the battery aging and use of fully charged/discharged datasets, which might result in poor prediction accuracy. Therefore, this study proposes a feature selection technique to adequately select optimum statistical feature subset and the use of partial data to determine the battery remaining useful life (RUL). The proposed approach demonstrated exceptional RUL prediction results, with RMSE of 0.00286 and MAE of 0.00222 using partial discharge data. The method shows prediction in comparison with the use of full data and state-of-the-art outcomes from previous studies of the same open data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration prognostic battery data sets。
5. Anti-IL-20 antibody improved motor function and reduced glial scar formation after traumatic spinal cord injury in rats:Lee, J.-S., Hsu, Y.-H., Chiu, Y.-S., Jou, I.-M., & Chang, M.-S. (2020). Journal of Neuroinflammation, 17(1), 156. Cite this article。Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes neurological devastating consequences, which result in partial or total paralysis. The irreversible neurological deficits and glial scar formation are characteristic of SCI. Inflammatory responses play a central role in regulating the pathogenesis of SCI. IL-20 is a proinflammatory cytokine involved in renal fibrosis and liver cirrhosis through upregulating TGF-β1 production. However, the role of IL-20 in SCI remains unclear. We used the in-vivo and in-vitro studies to delineate the association between IL-20 and SCI. We found that IL-20 was highly expressed in spinal cord after SCI in rats and upregulated the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines, whereas anti-IL-20 mAb 7E treatment remarkably inhibited the inflammatory response through inhibiting the levels of IL-20 and TGF-β1. Both motor and sensory functions were improved with anti-IL-20 mAb 7E treatment. These findings give evidence that IL-20 may be a promising target for SCI treatment。
6. Progress in biomass torrefaction: Principles, applications and challenges:Chen, W.-H., Lin, B.-J., Lin, Y.-Y., Chu, Y.-S., Ubando, A. T., Show, P. L., Ong, H. C., Chang, J.-S., Ho, S.-H., Culaba, A. B., Pétrissans, A., & Pétrissans, M. (2021). Progress in Energy and Combustion Science, 82, 100887. Cite this article。The development of biofuels has been considered as an important countermeasure to abate anthropogenic CO2 emissions and greenhouse effect. Thermochemical conversion processes are considered as the most efficient routes. In recently developing biomass conversion technologies, torrefaction has attracted much attention since it can effectively upgrade solid biomass and produce coal-like fuel. To provide a comprehensive review of the progress in biomass torrefaction technologies, this study performs an in-depth literature survey of torrefaction principles, processes, systems, and identifies a current trend in practical torrefaction development, and environmental performance. Moreover, the encountered challenges and perspectives from torrefaction development are underlined. Integrating torrefaction with other processes such as co-firing, gasification, pyrolysis, and ironmaking, etc., makes it more efficient and economically feasible in contrast to using a single process. By virtue of capturing carbon dioxide during the growth stage of biomass, negative carbon emissions can even be achieved from torrefied biomass。
7. Roles of Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor in Dengue Pathogenesis: From Pathogenic Factor to Therapeutic Target:Lai, Y.-C., Chao, C.-H., & Yeh, T.-M. (2020). Microorganisms, 8(6). Cite this article。Dengue virus (DENV) infection is the most prevalent mosquito-borne viral infection and can lead to severe dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and even life-threatening dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Although the cytokine storm has been revealed as a critical factor in dengue disease, the limited understanding of dengue immunopathogenesis hinders the development of effective treatments. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pleiotropic proinflammatory cytokine that mediates diverse immune responses, and the serum level of MIF positively correlates with disease severity in patients with dengue. MIF is involved in DENV replication and many pathological changes, such as vascular leakage, during DENV infection. In this paper, the pathogenic roles of MIF and the regulation of MIF secretion during DENV infection are reviewed. Furthermore, whether MIF is a potential therapeutic target against DENV infection is also discussed。
8. Global greenness in relation to reducing the burden of cardiovascular diseases: ischemic heart disease and stroke:Asri, A. K., Yu, C.-P., Pan, W.-C., Guo, Y. L., Su, H.-J., Lung, S.-C. C., Wu, C.-D., & Spengler, J. D. (2020). Environmental Research Letters, 15(12), 124003. Cite this article。This ecological study aimed to identify the association between greenness and cardiovascular diseases in terms of ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke in 183 countries worldwide. The country-level disability-adjusted life year (DALY) database provided by the WHO was used to represent the health burden due to IHD and stroke for the study countries. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was assessed to estimate the greenness in each country. After considering potential covariates, the generalized linear mixed model penalized quasi-likelihood (GLMMPQL) was applied to identify the greenness in relation to DALY loss due to IHD and stroke. A consistently significant negative association was found between greenness and both IHD and stroke; the NDVI coefficients of the main model were -11.245 (95% CI: -16.770, -5.720) and -4.387 (95% CI: -7.926, -0.085), respectively, in the DALY changes based on the increase of NDVI from 0 to 1。
9. Carcinogenesis of Male Oral Submucous Fibrosis Alters Salivary Microbiomes:Chen, M. Y., Chen, J. W., Wu, L. W., Huang, K. C., Chen, J. Y., Wu, W. S., Chiang, W. F., Shih, C. J., Tsai, K. N., Hsieh, W. T., Ho, Y. H., Wong, T. Y., Wu, J. H., & Chen, Y. L. (2020). Journal of Dental Research. Cite this article。Most oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) tumors arise from oral premalignant lesions. Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a premalignant stromal disease characterized by a high malignant transformation rate and high prevalence. Although a relationship between the inhabited microbiome and carcinogenesis has been proposed, the changes of the salivary microbiome during cancer formation remain unclear. This study compared the salivary microbiomes of male patients with OSCC and a predisposing OSF background (OSCC-OSF group). The results of high-throughput sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene indicated that the microbiome profile of OSF-related malignancy was associated with increased microbial stochastic fluctuation. Artificial intelligence selection algorithms consistently identified 5 key species in the OSCC-OSF group. Robust accuracy in predicting oral carcinogenesis was obtained with our exploratory and validation data sets. In conclusion, our results provided new insights into salivary microbiome alterations during the malignant transformation of OSF。
10. Anti-Cancer Effect of Cordycepin on FGF9-Induced Testicular Tumorigenesis:Chang, M.-M., Hong, S.-Y., Yang, S.-H., Wu, C.-C., Wang, C.-Y., & Huang, B.-M. (2020). International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 21(21). Cite this article。Cordycepin, a bioactive constituent from the fungus Cordyceps sinensis, could inhibit cancer cell proliferation and promote cell death via induction of cell cycle arrest, apoptosis and autophagy. We observed that cordycepin down-regulated the mRNA levels of FGF9, FGF18, FGFR2 and FGFR3 genes in MA-10 cells. The in vitro study revealed that cordycepin decreased FGF9-induced MA-10 cell proliferation by inhibiting p-ERK1/2, p-Rb and E2F1 expressions, and reducing the expressions of cyclins and CDKs. Moreover, an allograft model was performed with FGF9 intratumoral injection and/or intraperitoneal cordycepin injection to MA-10-tumor bearing C57BL/6J mice. Results showed that FGF9-induced tumor growth in cordycepin-treated mice was significantly smaller than PBS-treated control group. Furthermore, cordycepin decreased FGF9-induced FGFR1-4 protein expressions in vitro and in vivo. In summary, cordycepin inhibited FGF9-induced testicular tumor growth by suppressing the ERK1/2, Rb/E2F1, cell cycle pathways, and FGFR1-4 expressions, suggesting cordycepin can be used as novel anticancer drug for testicular cancers。

12. Dynamic Modeling and Experimental Validation of an Impact-Driven Piezoelectric Energy Harvester in Magnetic Field:Chen, C.-D., Wu, Y.-H., & Su, P.-W. (2020). Sensors, 20(21), 6170. Cite this article。In this study, an impact-driven piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) in magnetic field is presented. The PEH consists of a piezoelectric cantilever beam and plural magnets. The impact between magnets produces an impact energy and causes a transient beam vibration. The electric energy is generated by the piezoelectric effect. Based on the energy principle, a multi-degree of freedom mathematical model was developed to calculate the displacements, velocities, and voltage outputs of the PEH. A prototype of the PEH was fabricated. The maximum generated energy was about 0.4045 mJ for a single impact. A comparison between numerical and experimental results was presented in detail. It showed that the predictions based on the model agree with the experimental measurements. The PEH was connected to a diode bridge rectifier and a storage capacitor. The experiments showed that the energy stored in the capacitor can light up the LED。
13. Single Crystalline Higher Manganese Silicide Nanowire Arrays with Outstanding Physical Properties through Double Tube Chemical Vapor Deposition:Shen, C.-L., Yang, S.-M., & Lu, K.-C. (2020). Nanomaterials, 10(9), 1880. Cite this article。In this work, we report a novel and efficient silicidation method to synthesize higher manganese silicide (HMS) nanowires with interesting characterization and physical properties. High density silicon nanowire arrays fabricated by chemical etching reacted with MnCl2 precursor through a unique double tube chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system, where we could enhance the vapor pressure of the precursor and provide stable Mn vapor with a sealing effect. It is crucial that the method enables the efficient formation of high quality higher manganese silicide nanowires without a change in morphology and aspect ratio during the process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were utilized to characterize the HMS nanowires. High-resolution TEM studies confirm that the HMS nanowires were single crystalline Mn27Si47 nanowires of Nowotny Chimney Ladder crystal structures. The excellent physical properties of the HMS nanowires (NWs) make them attractive choices for applications in spintronic devices and field emitters。

Chitosan Oligosaccharides Suppress Nuclear Factor-Kappa B Activation and Ameliorate Experimental Autoimmune Uveoretinitis in Mice:Hsu, S.-M., Yang, C.-H., Tsai, H.-Y., Lin, C.-J., Fang, Y.-H., Shieh, C.-C., & Chen, S.-H. (2020). International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 21(21). Cite this article。We investigated the therapeutic potential and mechanism of chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) for experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU) in mice. EAU was induced in C57/BL6 mice by injection of human interphotoreceptor retinoid binding protein (IRBP) peptides. At the same time, a high or low dose (20 or 10 mg/kg) of COS or phosphate buffered saline (PBS) was given to mice daily after EAU induction. We found that mouse EAU is ameliorated by the high-dose COS treatment when compared with PBS treatment. In the retinas of high-dose COS-treated mice, the nuclear translocation of NF-κB subunit (p65) was suppressed, and the expression of several key EAU inflammatory mediators, IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-1α, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17, and MCP-1 was lowered. These results suggest that COS might be a potential treatment for posterior uveitis。

Direct synthesis of monolayer gold nanoparticles on epoxy based photoresist by photoreduction and application to surface-enhanced Raman sensing:Chen, Y.-J., Chang, W.-H., Li, C.-Y., Chiu, Y.-C., Huang, C.-C., & Lin, C.-H. (2021). Materials & Design, 197, 109211. Cite this article。The photoreduction method is a potential method in terms of simplification, speed, and cost of the process. This paper presents a simple, novel, and inexpensive method for the direct synthesis of a gold nanoparticle (AuNP) monolayer with a droplet of gold precursor on the surface of SU-8 under UV exposure, and its application to surface enhanced Raman sensing (SERS). TEM study revealed that a monolayer of AuNPs with an fcc crystalline structure was reduced on the surface of SU-8. The interparticle spacing and particle size were adjustable by controlling SU-8 initial curing time and repeated reduction. Photoreduction on SU-8 nanostructures was also achievable. The nanopillars' high specific surface area can help improve the density of the SERS hot spots, thereby effectively improving the analyte's Raman signal. The AuNPs/nanopillar substrate was applied to the detection of malachite green (aquaculture drug), and the sensitivity is enough to meet the EU regulations。

Cite this article。Herein, a new high entropy material is reported, i.e., a noble metal‑free high entropy glycerate (HEG), synthesized via a simple solvothermal process. The HEG consists of 5 different metals of Fe, Ni, Co, Cr, and Mn. The unique glycerate structure exhibits an excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with a low overpotential of 229 and 278 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, in 1 m KOH electrolyte, outperforming its subsystems of binary‑, ternary‑, and quaternary‑metal glycerates. The HEG also shows outstanding stability and durability in the alkaline electrolyte. The result demonstrates the significance of synergistic effect that gives additional freedoms to modify the electronic structure and coordination environment. Moreover, HEG@HEG electrolyzer shows a good overall water splitting performance and durability, requiring a cell voltage of 1.63 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2。 |

1. The Challenges in Using eHealth Decision Resources for Surrogate Decision-Making in the Intensive Care Unit. Sun, W.-N., & Kao, C.-Y. (2024). J Med Internet Res, 26, e47017. Read this article; The mortality rate in intensive care units (ICUs) is notably high, with patients often relying on surrogates for critical medical decisions due to their compromised state. This study then introduces eHealth literacy and the assessment tools to evaluate users’ capability and literacy levels in using eHealth resources. A clinical scenario involving surrogate decision-making is presented. This simulated case involves a patient with a hemorrhagic stroke who has lost consciousness and requires medical procedures such as tracheostomy. However, due to the medical surrogate’s lack of familiarity with eHealth devices and limited literacy in using eHealth resources, difficulties arise in assisting the patient in making medical decisions. This scenario highlights challenges related to eHealth literacy and solution strategies are proposed. In conclusion, effective ICU decision-making with eHealth tools requires a careful balance between efficiency with inclusivity. Health professionals should adopt a patient-centered approach to enhance the decision-making experience, particularly for individuals with limited eHealth literacy.;
2. Impact of Antenatal SARS-CoV-2 Exposure on SARS-CoV-2 Neutralization Potency. Chiang, C.-J., Hsu, W.-L., Su, M.-T., Ko, W.-C., Hsu, K.-F., & Tsai, P.-Y. (2024). Vaccines, 12(2), 164. Read this article; A pregnancy booster dose significantly reduces the risk and severity of COVID-19, and it is widely recommended. A prospective cohort study was conducted to compare the transplacental passage of maternal antibodies from vaccination or infection during three trimesters against both the vaccine-targeted Wuhan strain and the Omicron strain of SARS-CoV-2. Maternal-infant dyads from vaccinated mothers were collected between 6 June 2022 and 20 September 2022. We analyzed 38 maternal-infant dyads from mothers who had been infected with COVID-19 and 37 from mothers without any previous infection. Pregnant women who received their last COVID-19 vaccine dose in the third trimester exhibited the highest anti-spike protein antibody levels and neutralizing potency against both the Wuhan strain and Omicron BA.2 variant in their maternal and cord plasma. Both second- and third-trimester vaccination could lead to a higher level of neutralization against the Wuhan and Omicron strains. COVID-19 infection had a negative effect on the transplacental transfer ratio of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. A booster dose during the second or third trimester is encouraged for the maximum transplacental transfer of humoral protection against COVID-19 for infants.;
3. Empirical dynamic modeling for sustainable benchmarks of short-lived species. Tsai, C.-H., Munch, S. B., Masi, M. D., & Stevens, M. H. (2024). ICES Journal of Marine Science. Read this article; The paper introduces Empirical Dynamic Modeling (EDM) as a cutting-edge approach to improve sustainable management for short-lived species like Penaeidae brown shrimp, which exhibit highly fluctuating and chaotic dynamics. Traditional methods often overlook critical factors such as unobserved species interactions, leading to less accurate predictions. EDM stands out by effectively capturing these hidden interactions, providing more reliable forecasts of population responses to fishing pressures. Applied to U.S. Gulf of Mexico brown shrimp, EDM proved highly effective, leading to more sustainable and adaptive fisheries management that truly reflects the complexity of marine ecosystems.;

Chu, S.-Y., Wu, M.-J., Yeh, T.-H., Lee, C.-T., & Lee, H.-Y. (2023). Nanomaterials, 13(6), 1064. Read this article
This study utilized a low‑cost hydrothermal method to synthesize gallium oxide hydroxide (GaOOH) nanorods and adopted a high‑temperature annealing processes to develop nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensors based on gallium oxide (Ga2O3) nanorods. To achieve a high surface‑to‑volume ratio of GaOOH nanorods, optimization methods were proposed in this study, including optimizing the thickness of the tin oxide (SnO2) seed layer and the precursor concentrations in the hydrothermal synthesis. In addition, GaOOH nanorods could cause dehydrogenation through annealing process to transform into Ga2O3 nanorods and increased the amount of oxygen vacancy. The optimal surface‑to‑volume ratio of GaOOH nanorods was obtained by using a 50 nm seed layer and a precursor concentration ratio of Ga(NO3)3·9H2O/HMT of 12 mM/10 mM in the hydrothermal synthesis. Furthermore, the NO2 gas sensors with 400 °C‑annealed Ga2O3 nanorod sensing membranes exhibited excellent gas sensing performance. The responsivity was 1184.6 % and response and recovery times were 63.6 s and 135.7 s, respectively, under a NO2 concentration of 10 ppm. The sensor was capable of detecting NO2 concentration as low as 100 ppb, with a responsivity of 34.2 %. Due to its low‑cost production and excellent sensing performance, Ga2O3 nanorods hold great potential for applications in NO2 gas sensors.

Neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's affect motor functions, resulting in abnormal movements. These symptoms, including tremors and hand movement disorders, can be subtle and vary daily, making evaluating the disease during a short clinical session challenging. To address the issue, this study presents an approach for detecting human micromotion using Wi‑Fi channel state information, enabling home health monitoring and examination in regular‑sized rooms. The proposed method was tested on three types of motion, and the results demonstrated that micromotion could be accurately captured at multiple locations within the experimental environment. The computer algorithm achieved an average accuracy of 90.9 % (single Wi‑Fi link) to 95.7 % (multiple Wi‑Fi links) in computing the frequency and duration of simulated hand tremors.

3. Thinking more wisely: using the Socratic method to develop critical thinking skills amongst healthcare students.
Ho, Y.-R., Chen, B.-Y., & Li, C.-M. (2023). BMC Medical Education, 23(1), 173. Read this article
In medicine, critical thinking is required for managing and tolerating medical uncertainty, as well as solving professional problems and treating diseases. However, the core of Confucianism, teacher‑centered and exam‑oriented settings in middle and high school education may pose challenges to developing critical thinking in Han Chinese or Taiwanese students. Thus, how to guide students with less stable foundations of critical thinking might require more approach. Almost all healthcare students must complete a biochemistry laboratory course as part of their basic science training. Thus, we aimed to train students to develop critical thinking in the biochemistry laboratory course by using learning sheets and teacher guidance based on the Socratic method and questioning. We recruited second‑year students from a medical college, of whom 32 had medical science and biotechnology majors (MSB), 27 had pharmaceutical science majors (PS), and 85 were medical undergraduate (MU) students. Clarity and logic dimensions were identified as the key elements to facilitate the development of critical thinking skills through learning sheets and teacher guidance in students across all three different healthcare majors. The results showed that metacognitive monitoring via Socratic questioning learning sheets have demonstrated potential encourage students to develop critical thinking skills in all dimensions. Another unique contribution of current study was present the heterogeneous learning patterns and progress trajectories of clarity and logic dimensions within classes.
4. Funneling of Oblique Incident Light through Subwavelength Metallic Slits.
Chen, A. E., Xia, X.-Q., Hong, J.-S., & Chen, K.-R. (2023). Nanomaterials, 13(1), 61. Read this article
Light funneling determines how enhanced energy flows into subwavelength slits. In contrast to the previous research on oblique incident light, this study reveals that light funneling in the slits can be highly asymmetric, even at small angles. This mechanism is explained by polarized fields and charges, which are induced using Poynting vectors. It is shown that when light is obliquely incident to the slits perforated in a perfect electric conductor, asymmetrical fields and charges accumulate at the upper apex corners of the left (right) sides. When light is incident from the left (right) side, more (less) induced fields and charges accumulate in the left (right) slit corner so that the funneling width, area, and energy flow at the left (right) side increases (decreases).

Introduction: Hepatitis C (HCV) is associated with extra‑hepatic involvment, morbidity as well as metabolic changes. Whether these might be reversible if sustained virologic response (SVR) is achieved by direct‑acting antiviral (DAA) therapy remains unknown. Methods: Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) individuals receiving DAA treatment with SVR were compared to those who underwent spontaneous clearance (SC) of HCV infection at the 2‑year follow‑up. Plasma oxidative stress markers (oxidized low‑density lipoprotein (oxLDL), 8‑hydroxy‑2′‑deoxyguanosine (8‑OHdG), malondialdehyde (MDA) and ischemia‑modified albumin (IMA)) as well as progression of liver fibrosis were evaluated. Results: Compared to SC individuals, those in the CHC group exhibited at baseline higher levels of oxLDL, 8‑OHdG and IMA but not of MDA. In the SC group, 8‑OHdG levels were elevated at 2‑year post‑SVR (p = 0.0409), while the DAA‑treated CHC group showed decrease in oxLDL (p < 0.0001) and 8‑OHdG (p = 0.0255) levels, approaching those of the SC group, but increased MDA (p = 0.0055) levels. Additionally, oxLDL levels were positively correlated with liver stiffness measurements at SVR (p = 0.017) and at 1 year post‑SVR (p = 0.002). Conclusions: Plasma oxLDL showed post‑SVR normalization after clearance of HCV viremia with DAAs and was associated with levels of hepatic fibrosis.

A previous 1H‑NMR method allowed the quantification of ephedrine alkaloids; however, there were some disadvantages. The cyclized derivatives resulted from the impurities of diethyl ether were identified and benzene was selected as the better extraction solvent. The locations of ephedrine alkaloids were confirmed with 2D NMR. Therefore, a specific 1H‑NMR method has been modified for the quantification of ephedrine alkaloids. Accordingly, twenty Ephedrae Herba samples could be classified into three classes: (I) E. sinica‑like species; (II) E. intermedia‑like species; (III) others (lower alkaloid contents). The results indicated that ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are the major alkaloids in Ephedra plants, but the concentrations vary greatly determined by the plant species and the collection locations.

Emerging evidence has shown that microRNAs play pivotal roles in wound healing. Exosomal miRNAs have been identified and explored as essential markers for diagnostic medicine. However, the role of exosomal miR‑21 in wounds has yet to be well studied. We developed an easy‑to‑use, rapid, paper‑based microfluidic‑exosomal miR‑21 extraction device to determine wound prognosis. We isolated and then quantitatively examined exosomal miR‑21 in wound fluids. Eight improving wounds displayed lower levels of exosomal miR‑21 expression after wound debridement. However, four instances of increased exosomal miR‑21 expression levels were notably associated with patients with poor healing wounds despite aggressive wound debridement, indicating a predictive role of tissue exosomal miR‑21 for wound outcome. Paper‑based nucleic acid extraction device provides a rapid and user‑friendly approach for evaluating exosomal miR‑21 in wound fluids as a means of monitoring wounds. Our data suggest that tissue exosomal miR‑21 is a reliable marker for determining current wound status.

8. Effect of morphologies and compositions of silver‑based multicomponent heterogeneous nanocrystals on the reduction of 4‑nitrophenol.
Huang, M.-S., Cheng, H.-T., & Hsu, S.-W. (2023). Nanoscale Advances. Read this article
Silver‑based nanocrystals have excellent catalytic performance in various reactions, such as the reduction of 4‑nitrophenol. The catalytic performance of nanocrystals varies with serval parameters, including nanocrystal morphology, composition, and plasmoninduced hot electrons around nanocrystals. Here, highly heterogeneous nanocrystals (Au‑Ag and Ag2S‑Ag nanocrystals) fabricated on polymer films via seed‑mediated are used as catalysts for the reduction of 4‑nitrophenol, and the effect of the morphology and composition of nanocrystals on the catalytic performance is investigated. These nanocrystals on polymer films exhibit higher reusability (low catalysts loss) in catalytic applications compared to catalysts dispersed freely in the reaction solution. The excellent catalyst performance of these heterogeneous nanocrystals is attributed to their high surface area/volume ratio (flower‑like nanocrystal) and strong synergistic effect (cage‑like nanocrystals). These nanocrystals with special morphologies and composites showed higher catalytic performance (higher reactivity at lower catalysts contents) than silver‑based nanocrystals reported in the literature. Due to the excellent plasmonic properties of Ag nanocrystals, the catalytic performance of these nanocrystals can be further enhanced by generating hot electrons around the nanocrystals under irradiation. These results demonstrated that by carefully controlling the morphology and composition of nanocrystals, it is possible to design and fabricate excellent catalysts for various reactions.

Glioblastomas (GBMs) often resist radiotherapy, with many recurring post‑treatment. Enhancing radiotherapy via gene‑silencing has thus gained interest. However, challenges in consistent RNA loading in nanoparticles hinder clinical application. We've bioengineered bacteriophage particles with a three‑way junction (b‑3WJ) RNA scaffold for targeting radioresistant GBM genes. In vitro, the b‑3WJ RNA cleavage by Dicer enzyme is trackable via fluorescence microscopy. Moreover, TrQβ@b‑3WJ effectively silences both EGFR and IKKα genes, inhibiting the NF‑κB pathway and DNA repair. Utilizing convection‑enhanced delivery (CED) for TrQβ@b‑3WJ, followed by 2 Gy X‑ray, the median survival extended to over 60 days, compared to just 31 days in the standard 2 Gy X‑ray group. This highlights RNAi‑based strategies' potential and CED's efficacy in enhancing radiotherapy for GBMs without systemic toxicity.

A stick‑slip asymmetry can break the symmetry of the local hydrodynamic force distribution on the surface of an otherwise no‑slip or uniform‑slip particle. Here we use the Lorentz reciprocal theorem to demonstrate that such asymmetry, even in a small amount, can completely change the swimming characteristics of a self‑propelled spherical squirmer, making its behavior markedly different than a no‑slip or uniform‑slip squirmer. We find that the swimming velocity U of a stick‑slip squirmer can be driven alone by a symmetric extensile/contractile squirming from the B2 mode that commonly provides a stresslet, capable of reversing the swimming direction of the squirmer. A symmetric force dipole, namely stresslet S, can also be generated solely by a unidirectional diverging and converging squirming from the B1 mode that provides the thrust for the swimming, which can invert the stresslet of the squirmer from extensile type to contractile type or vice versa. When these two squirming modes are executing together, both U and S can be enhanced or diminished due to the interplays between asymmetric squirming forces generated by these two modes, depending on the stick‑slip partition and orientation. These distinctive features arising from stick‑slip asymmetry can not only be made geometrically tunable for steering the motion of a squirmer, but also provide new means for making efficient artificial microswimmers using catalytic Janus particles.

Early detection of developmental delays relies on the accuracy of the caregivers’ concerns of children’s developmental problems. The aim of this study was to investigate the agreement between the caregivers’ awareness of children’s developmental problems and professional identification. Caregivers of 1963 children (age range: 5–71 months; mean: 38.4 months) younger than 6 years old who were at risk of developmental delays and referred to the center for a comprehensive evaluation were enrolled in this study. The caregivers’ initial concerns of cognitive, speech/language, emotional/behavioral, motor and global development showed low agreement with the results of professional identification. The major disagreement was observed in the cognitive domain. Speech/language developmental concern was an important red‑flag indicator of cognitive and emotional/behavioral developmental delays. The comorbid presence of ID, ASD, and ADHD was high in this study. Child’s age and mothers’ level of education were significant indicators for detecting the child’s developmental problems. It is recommended that assessing the cognitive developmental status is essential for all children in the identification process. Practitioners should not overlook caregivers' concern about speech/language and emotional/behavioral development. Transdisciplinary practitioners provide educational guidance to caregivers, especially in the domains of cognitive, speech/language, and emotional/behavioral development.

Minor physical anomalies (MPAs) have been suggested as biomarkers and potential pathophysiological significance for schizophrenia. However, an integrated, clinically useful tool that used qualitative and quantitative MPAs to visualize and predict schizophrenia risk while characterizing the degree of importance of MPA items was lacking. We recruited a training set and a validation set to conduct logistic regression and Lasso regression to select the best parameters of MPAs and constructed nomograms. Two nomograms were built to show the weights of these predictors. The results of the validation dataset verified the efficacy of the nomograms with the area under the curve 0.84 and 0.85 in the logistic regression model and lasso regression model, respectively. This study provides an easy‑to‑use tool based on validated risk models of schizophrenia and reflects a divergence in development between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls (https://www.szprediction.net/).

Seven new anthraquinones with rare 2‑isopropyldihydrofuran (1–3) and 2,2‑dimethylpyrano (4–7) moieties together with thirty‑four known compounds were isolated from the extracts of whole Hedyotis diffusa plants. Their structures were elucidated and established by various spectroscopic and spectrometric analytical methods. Among these isolates, selected compounds were examined for their anti‑inflammatory activity. The results showed that rare substituted anthraquinones displayed potent inhibitory activity with IC50 values ranging from 0.15 ± 0.01 to 5.52 ± 1.59 µM on the N‑formyl‑methionyl‑leucyl‑phenylalanine/cytochalasin B (fMLP/CB)‑induced superoxide anion generation and elastase release cellular models. Meanwhile, the proposed drug target of the active anthraquinone was studied by computer modeling. The binding affinity between the anti‑inflammatory anthraquinone and elastase was evaluated by molecular docking. These results provided the scientific insight into the medicinal values of Hedyotis diffusa and vision of development as lead compounds. (Abstract, Antioxidants, 2022, 11(2), 335)

Teachers are more likely to use a loud voice at work than the general working population, but few longitudinal studies have been conducted on their risk of voice disorders. The occurrence of voice disorders in private school teachers was assessed by using the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000 of Taiwan. This study included private school teachers who were under 35 years old and newly employed between 2000 and 2010, and used workers with other occupations as the comparison cohort. After adjusting for age, sex, income, and comorbidities of sinusitis and laryngitis, private school teachers had a higher risk of developing voice disorders (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.58; 95% confidence intervals: 1.43–1.75). In addition, the finding that elementary and highschool teachers had a higher risk than college teachers (HR: 2.56 vs. 1.44) and the pattern of increases in cumulative incidence over time. The results support the causality between occupation and voice disorders in teachers.

This study aimed to assess the impact of diabetic retinopathy (DR) severity on the incidence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) and end‑stage renal disease (ESRD) in T1D patients. Patients diagnosed with T1D between 1999 and 2013 were identified from patient‑level data of Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research database. A total of 1135 patients were included and classified into mild DR (n = 454), severe DR (n = 227), or non‑DR (n = 454) by using propensity score matching. Multi‑state model analyses, an extension of competing risk models with adjustment for transition‑specific covariates for prediction of subsequent MACE and ESRD, were performed. MACE and ESRD risks were significantly higher in the severe DR patients; a 2.97‑fold (1.73, 5.07) and 12.29‑fold (6.50, 23.23) increase in the MACE risk among the severe DR patients compared to the mild DR and DR‑free patients, respectively; and, a 5.91‑fold (3.50, 9.99) and 82.31‑fold (29.07, 233.04) greater ESRD risk of severe DR patients than that of the mild DR and DR‑free groups, respectively (p < 0.001). Severity of DR was significantly associated with the late diabetes‑related vascular events (i.e., MACE, ESRD) among T1D patients.

Horizontally stacked pure‑Ge‑nanosheet gate‑all‑around field‑effect transistors were developed in this study. Large lattice mismatch Ge/Si multilayers were intentionally grown as the starting material rather than Ge/GeSi multilayers to acquire the benefits of the considerable difference in material properties of Ge and Si for realising selective etching. Additionally, dislocations were observed in suspended Ge nanosheets because of the absence of a Ge/Si interface and the disappearance of the dislocation‑line tension force owing to the elongation of misfit dislocation at the interface. Forming gas annealing of the suspended Ge nanosheets resulted in a significant increase in the glide force compared to the dislocation‑line tension force; the dislocations were easily removed because of this condition and the small size of the nanosheets. Based on this structure, a new mechanism of dislocation removal from suspended Ge nanosheet structures by annealing was described, which resulted in the structures exhibiting excellent gate control and electrical properties.
7. Effects of symmetry breaking of the structurally‑disordered Hamiltonian ensembles on the anisotropic decoherence of qubits.
Chen, H.-B. (2022). Scientific Reports, 12(1), 2869 Read this article
Hamiltonian ensemble (HE) is a novel approach to investigate the incoherent dynamical processes of quantum systems. It is particularly versatile in locally detecting bipartite quantum correlations and the characterization of the process nonclassicality. The HE theory is, in principle, applicable to very general unital dynamics; however, due to the technical difficulty imposed by the non‑abelian algebraic structure underlying the HE, the results are exemplified under the frameworks of pure dephasing or isotropic depolarization. In this work, I achieve to circumvent the algebraic difficulty and go further beyond the aforementioned two frameworks, reaching the regime of anisotropic decoherence. A new type of HE of structural disorder in canonical form is studied. The disorder is categorized according to different levels of symmetry of its geometry. I have demonstrated four levels of symmetry, from the most symmetric case of spherical symmetry to the discrete type of simultaneous reflectional symmetries. This enables us to clearly distinguish how the different incoherent dynamical behaviors are caused by various types of symmetry breaking. These results significantly enhance the applicability the HE‑simulation of open quantum systems.

Liver fibrosis is associated with liver‑related outcomes, yet often underdiagnosed in the primary care settings. Hyperuricemia is associated with non‑alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but the relationship between hyperuricemia and liver fibrosis remains unclear. Data on individuals without NAFLD is also limited. We investigated the association between hyperuricemia and liver fibrosis in subjects with and without NAFLD. This study recruited 11,690 relevant participants from a health‑checkup center. Hyperuricemia was positively associated with significant liver fibrosis (p = 0.001) in the logistic regression. The positive association of hyperuricemia with significant liver fibrosis remained in subjects with NAFLD (p = 0.001), but not in subjects without NAFLD.

This work aims at optimizing the hardware implementation of the SubBytes and inverse SubBytes operations in the advanced encryption standard (AES). To this, the composite field arithmetic (CFA) is employed to optimize all building blocks in S‑box (and inverse S‑box) of SubBytes (and inverse SubBytes) transformation. A joint design of S‑box and inverse S‑box is also proposed to further enhance the area efficiency. Specifically, the area of multiplier in the Galois composite field, GF((22)2), is reduced. The squaring and multiplication with constant λ in GF((22)2) are combined and optimized as well. Moreover, the multiplicative inversion in GF((22)2) is manually optimized. Furthermore, the S‑box and inverse S‑box are combined and optimized using the pre_processing and post_processing modules. To increase the throughput, a balanced and pipelined architecture is derived. Using the proposed architecture, a throughput of 5.79 Gbps for the S‑box can be achieved on Virtex‑6 XC6VLX240T and 10% better than the conventional work. According to the ASIC implementation result, the proposed design can still achieve the highest area efficiency and approximately 30% better than conventional works using TSMC 90nm process.
此外,使用 pre_processing 和 post_processing 模塊對S盒和逆S盒進行組合和優化。
10. Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Cerebral Vascular Permeability in Type 2 Diabetes‑Related Cerebral Microangiopathy.
Chen, Y.-C., Lu, B.-Z., Shu, Y.-C., & Sun, Y.-T. (2022). Frontiers in Endocrinology, 12.2721‑2728 Read this article
Aims: Diabetes‑related cerebral microangiopathy can manifest as cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and exhibit cognitive decline. To find the early change of function in advance, this study examined the spatiotemporal dynamics of cerebral vascular permeability (Ktrans) in the progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: Ktrans was crossectional measured in T2DM and non‑diabetes groups with or without CSVD using dynamic contrast‑enhanced MRI (DCE‑MRI). Results: In all patients with T2DM, the Ktrans of white matter (WM) was increased, whereas the Ktrans of gray matter (GM) was increased only in T2DM with CSVD. The involvement of WM was earlier than GM and was prior to the CSVD features could be visualized on MRI. Among the commonly available four CSVD items of MRI, microbleeds was most sensitive, indicating the increased permeability in all patients. Increased Ktrans in T2DM was more associated with moderate WM hyperintensity but less with the presence of lacunae or multiple perivascular spaces, in contrast to patients without diabetes. The differential correlation suggested distinct mechanisms underlying diabetes‑related CSVD and other CSVDs. Conclusions: This study highlights the early development of cerebral microangiopathy with increased BBB leakage in T2DM, prior to the CSVD features can be visualized on MRI. The results may increase the proactivity of clinicians in recognizing the subsequent neurological comorbidities.

1. Z-Complementary Code Sets With Flexible Lengths From Generalized Boolean Functions。
Wu, S. W., Şahin, A., Huang, Z. M., & Chen, C. Y. (2021). IEEE Access, 9, 4642-4652.
In the literature, most Z-complementary code set (ZCCS) constructions based on generalized Boolean functions lead to sequences of power-of-two length. In this study, we show that our proposed direct constructions result in ZCCSs of both power-of-two length and non-power-of-two length. Since the monomials of degrees more than 2 are employed in the proposed constructions, more ZCCSs can be obtained. The constructed ZCCSs admit the theoretical upper bound on the size for a ZCCS when the sequence length is a power of two. Also, the corresponding peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) is theoretically upper-bounded when a sequence in the set is used in OFDM. The proposed constructions extend the applications of ZCCSs in practical communication systems, e.g., multicarrier CDMA (MC-CDMA) system, by offering flexible sequence lengths, various set sizes, and bounded PAPR.
2. Anti-IL-20 Antibody Protects against Ischemia/Reperfusion-Impaired Myocardial Function through Modulation of Oxidative Injuries, Inflammation and Cardiac Remodeling。
Tsai, K.-L., Chou, W.-C., Cheng, H.-C., Huang, Y.-T., Chang, M.-S., & Chan, S.-H. (2021). Antioxidants, 10(2), 275.
We confirmed that IL-20 antibody injection at the moment of reperfusion reduces I/R-caused oxidative injuries, apoptosis, inflammation, as well as the elevation in markers of cardiac fibrosis and remodeling. We also proved that IL-20 antibody injection attenuates cardiac functional impairment, including the repressed EF and FS, the increased left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes, and plasma markers of cardiac injury and heart failure. This study elucidates that IL-20 antibody might be favorable in lessening reperfusion injury in the treatment of AMI.

3. The Spatial-Temporal Distribution of GOCI-Derived Suspended Sediment in Taiwan Coastal Water Induced by Typhoon Soudelor。
Chau, P. M., Wang, C.-K., & Huang, A.-T. (2021). Remote Sensing, 13(2), 194.
We use high temporal resolution Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) to monitor the spatial–temporal distribution of suspended sediment (SS) along the coastal waters of northern Taiwan which was affected by Typhoon Soudelor from 8 to 10 August 2015. The results show that SS concentration increased during 11–14 August and then decreased during 19–22 August. The mouths of the Dajia River and Tamsui River were hotspots of SS, ranging from 9 to 15 g/m3, during the two post-typhoon periods. It is also shown that maximum SS occurred in the west and east coastal water during 11–14 August and 19–22 August, respectively. Furthermore, an exponential decay model was used to compute the time when 90% of typhoon-induced SS was dissipated after Typhoon Soudelor. It was found that the mouths of the Tamsui River and Heping River had the longest time, with a range of 360–480 h.

In this study, we aim to clarify the novel aptamer, Tx-01, clinical role and possible molecular mechanisms of Tx-01 in Ovarian cancer. Immunostaining and statistical analysis were performed to detect the interaction of Tx-01 and heat shock protein 70/Notch1 intracellular domain in OvCa. The in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated the potential mechanisms of Tx-01. Tx-01 reduced serous OvCa OVCAR3 cell migration and invasion and inhibited HSP70 nuclear translocation by interrupting the intracellular HSP70/NICD interaction. Furthermore, Tx-01 suppressed serous-type OVCAR3 cell tumor growth in vivo. Tx-01 acts as a prognostic factor through its interaction with membrane-bound HSP70 on ascetic circulating tumor cells and is reported to be involved in natural killer (NK) cell recognition and activation. Our data demonstrated that Tx-01 interacted with HSP70 and showed therapeutic and prognostic effects in serous OvCa. Tx-01 might be a potential inhibitor for use in serous OvCa treatment.
5. Diversified Phenomena in Metal- and Transition-Metal-Adsorbed Graphene Nanoribbons。
Lin, S.-Y., Tran, N. T. T., & Lin, M.-F. (2021). Nanomaterials, 11(3), 630.
In this study, the significant similarities and differences among Bi-/Al-/Ti-/Fe-/Co-/Ni-adsorbed graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are thoroughly investigated by using the first-principles calculations. The main characterizations include the adsorption sites, bond lengths, stability, band structures, charge densities, spin- and orbital-projected density of states, and magnetic configurations. Furthermore, there exists a transformation from finite gap semiconducting to metallic behaviors, accompanied by the nonmagnetism, antiferromagnetism, or ferromagnetism. The proposed theoretical framework could be generalized to explore other emergent 1D and 2D materials.

6. Nanomedicine-Based Strategies Assisting Photodynamic Therapy for Hypoxic Tumors: State-of-the-Art Approaches and Emerging Trends。
Shih, C.-Y., Wang, P.-T., Su, W.-C., Teng, H., & Huang, W.-L. (2021). Biomedicines, 9(2), 137.
Since the first clinical cancer treatment in 1978, photodynamic therapy (PDT) technologies have been largely improved and approved for clinical usage in various cancers. Due to the oxygen-dependent nature, the application of PDT is still limited by hypoxia in tumor tissues. Thus, the development of effective strategies for manipulating hypoxia and improving the effectiveness of PDT is one of the most important area in PDT field. Recently, emerging nanotechnology has benefitted progress in many areas, including PDT. In this review, we will discuss the state of the art of nanomedicine-based approaches for assisting PDT for treating hypoxic tumors, mainly based on oxygen replenishing and oxygen dependency diminishing strategies. We will emphasize emerging trends about the use of nanoscale metal–organic framework materials and the combination of PDT with immunotherapy. We further discuss future perspectives and challenges associated with these trends in both the aspects of mechanism and clinical translation.
7. Phage Digestion of a Bacterial Capsule Imparts Resistance to Two Antibiotic Agents。
Luo, C.-H., Hsu, Y.-H., Wu, W.-J., Chang, K.-C., & Yeh, C.-S. (2021). Microorganisms, 9(4), 794.
Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect bacteria, which have developed extraordinary proteins for recognizing and degrading their host. Inspired by the remarkable development of viral proteins, phage-derived proteins have been used for clinical treatment of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria infection. For example, the polysaccharide depolymerase or endolysins were used to attenuate bacterial cell walls or to destroy the bacterial membrane. More recent efforts have addressed bacterial selection to treat drug-stress or phage infection. We, then, propose a combination strategy of co-treating MDR Acinetobacter baumannii with phage endolysin derived peptide and polysaccharide depolymerase (the tail fiber molecules). In the study, we surprisingly observed a temporary increase in resistance to colistin, used as the last-resort antibiotic for MDR Gram negative bacterial infection. Evaluation of the phage attacking behavior suggests the temporary increased resistance may be associated with an increased risk of drug‑resistance during phage‑antibiotic synergy in clinical MDR A. baumannii treatment.
8. Computer-Assisted System in Stress Radiography for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury with Correspondent Evaluation of Relevant Diagnostic Factors。
Wang, C.-K., Lin, L.-C., Sun, Y.-N., Lai, C.-S., Chen, C.-H., & Kao, C.-Y. (2021). Diagnostics, 11(3), 419.
Retrospective research for 177 patients (129 with completely torn ACLs confirmed on magnetic resonance imaging) at our institution was performed. The anterior tibial translations with four different methods were measured by a computer-assisted system. Mean anterior tibial translations were significantly increased in the patients with a completely torn ACL, with diagnostic accuracies ranging from 66.7% to 75.1%. The diagnostic accuracy of method four was negatively associated with the time interval between stress radiography and MRI as well as force-joint distance on stress view, and not significantly associated with age, gender, flexion angle, intercondylar distance, and force-joint angle.
9. Anti-Inflammatory Principles from the Needles of Pinus taiwanensis Hayata and In Silico Studies of Their Potential Anti-Aging Effects。
Kuo, P.-C., Li, Y.-C., Kusuma, A. M., Tzen, J. T. C., Hwang, T.-L., Ye, G.-H., Yang, M.-L., & Wang, S.-Y. (2021). Antioxidants, 10(4), 598.
Pinus needle tea, which is very popular in Eastern countries, is claimed to have significant anti-aging effects. In this study, five undescribed compounds as well as seventy-two known compounds were characterized from the methanol extracts of P. taiwanensis needles. Most of the isolates were examined for their anti-inflammatory bioactivity, and six compounds exhibited significant inhibitions on superoxide anion generation and elastase release. These ingredients were subjected to docking computing to evaluate their binding affinity on the ghrelin receptor to explore the potentials of anti-aging effect. Three tested compounds formed a stable complex with the ghrelin receptor via hydrogen bonds and different types of interactions, and it suggested these flavonoids to be responsible for the potential anti-aging effects of pine needle tea.
10. Electrosynthesized Ni‑P nanospheres with high activity and selectivity towards photoelectrochemical plastics reforming。
Lin, C.-Y., Huang, S.-C., Lin, Y.-G., Hsu, L.-C., & Yi, C.-T. (2021). Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, 296, 120351.
Photoelectrochemical reforming of plastic waste offers an environmentally‑benign and sustainable route for hydrogen generation. Nonetheless, little attention was paid to develop electrocatalysts that can efficiently and selectively catalyze oxidative transformation of valueless plastic wastes into valued chemicals. Herein, we report on facile electrosynthesis of nickel‑phosphorus nanospheres (nanoNi‑P), and their versatility in catalyzing hydrogen generation, water oxidation, and reforming of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Notably, composite of nanoNi‑P with carbon nanotubes (CNT/nanoNi‑P) requires −180 mV overpotential to drive hydrogen generation at -100 mA cm−2. Besides, CV‑activated nanoNi‑P (nanoNi‑P(CV)) was shown to be capable of reforming PET into formate with high selectivity (Faradic efficiency= ~100 %). Efficient and selective generation of hydrogen and formate from PET reforming is realized utilizing an Earth‑abundant photoelectrochemical platform based on nanoNi‑P(CV)-modified TiO2 nanorods photoanode and CNT/nanoNi‑P cathode. This work paves a path for developing artificial leaf for simultaneous environmental mitigation and photosynthesis of renewable fuels and valued chemicals.

**Quote**
Among these walls of bookshelves, lies books by giants themselves. Furniture of generations old, yet to someone they are gold. Rustic portraits on the wall, were there for you to recall. A century old of knowledge, anchored after a final voyage. ——Deutsche Bibliothek
**Origins**
Centuries of German classical knowledge rest within the grasp of your hand, a treasure trove of history and human wisdom. At NCKU Main Library's 'Deutsche Bibliothek' (German Bookroom), you can immerse yourself in rare European collections without needing to travel to Germany. Nestled on the 4th floor of NCKU Main Library, the Deutsche Bibliothek opened its doors on December 16, 2017, amassing a treasury of thousands of precious German books spanning four generations, from East to West Germany. This collection has woven a remarkable connection between Germany and Taiwan. Sabina Kowalewski, director of neonatology at the University of Bonn, cherished the hope that her books would continue to inspire and be read by countless individuals. Fulfilling Sabina's wish, her devoted apprentice, Dr. Jen-her Lu, has carried forward this legacy. The precious collection of books embarked on a journey across vast oceans, ultimately finding a home in Tainan.
Reflecting the Kowalewski family's passion for literature, reverence for wisdom, intergenerational affection, and the mentor-student bond, the Deutsche Bibliothek's collection remains a source of enrichment for readers. We cordially invite you to immerse yourself in the experience of the Deutsche Bibliothek.
